We had a call from an Ottawa owner not too long ago who was having an issue with his transmission. Chuck asked him if he had checked the transmission fluid.  He replied that he was looking at the tank and it was full. Chuck explained to him that the tank he was looking at was a part of the hydraulic system and filled with hydraulic fluid and was completely independent of the transmission. We did not have any further conversations with the caller and so we are pretty sure that the addition of some transmission fluid fixed the problem.

A simple overview of the engine layout can be very helpful. Chuck has answered these questions many times. In this photo you can see where the transmission fluid dipstick is located in the engine compartment. The hydraulic fluid is a separate tank and you can see in the other photo where the hydraulic fluid gauge is. Checking these once a month will be a huge benefit to your trucks and keep them from experiencing fluid-related disruptions. It is an easy way to protect your investment.
